Collaborative Unit Linking Information Literacy with Content Area

Our school is very data driven. We meet monthly to review and analyze benchmark test data and discuss ways to improve our students' learning. Recently, I met with the English teachers at my school and we determined that a weak area for our students in English is analyzing poetry. After reviewing the data, we worked together to create a unit to help the students improve in this area. The students came to the media center over a 4 day period and the students learned how to analyze poetry by practicing on song lyrics. The research they did in the media center helped them to understand the lyrics and poetry that they were analyzing. We will be repeating the benchmark testing in the next couple of weeks to see if the scores improved, but based on the assessment for the unit, most of the students were able to interpret poetry more comfortably.
